In May 2024, I worked on “Akinlabi”, a captivating collection of digital-to-print and acrylic art pieces that was an exploration of a new style of art. Akinlabi, my birth name, means “we have given birth to a warrior” in Yoruba. This collection, while named after me, is fundamentally an ode to my mother and the incredible journey she undertook from girlhood to motherhood.
Each piece in this collection is a visual narrative, blending the strength and grace of marble busts with the fluidity and dynamism of organic digital and acrylic brushstrokes. The marble busts symbolize enduring strength and timeless beauty, while the brushstrokes reflect the ever-evolving journey of life and emphasis to the detals of navigating it.
Renowned Nigerian Architect, Olajumoke Adenowo, now proudly owns these pieces, a testament to the collection’s profound impact and story behind it. The pieces she acquired are name; Elizabeth, Iyawo Olawanle and Iya Akinlabi.
Akinlabi is more than an art collection; it’s a tribute to the warrior spirit within us all, inspired by my mother’s resilience and growth. Through this collection, I aim to celebrate the transformative power of love, strength, and ultimately celebrate Mothers.
